the death of graphic designers

I must shamefully admit that for 15 years now, i have been actively looking for a job. 10 years ago i would still land job interviews, although very far in between. The last 5 years… i only got a number of phone interviews and a handful of in-person interviews. I have a web stat counter in my online portfolio for more than 20 years now which includes information on the following: source of link (search engine or direct), IP address, location, date and time of day, which page, how long on each page, their exit page, etc. I know when someone views my portfolio link. there are weekly hits, aside from crawlers.

While i mentioned in the past, after graduating, i told myself i would never work for a phone directory nor a newspaper, because it doesn’t really require much creativity and not enough design projects. i sent some resumes to ad agencies, but didn’t really pursue them because that involved commercials, and that was too stressful for me. I knew a LOT of ad agency people, and it wasn’t for me. So i was only interested in applying to design studios, which i thought was my ultimate dream job. Although i went to school to become an Industrial Designer, there were no job prospects in the Philippines. The closest was packaging design so I was able to get hired to design packages for Procter & Gamble. And the rest, as they say… was history.

Did i mention my last resort were phone books and newspapers? Like, if desperate enough? Well, i worked for a yellow page company for 8 years, and it was one of the best times of my life. Not only did i design ads for practically every business in the state of Hawaii, i was head of the design and production department.

And newspapers? Well, now on my 14th year with a weekly newspaper company. I can’t say it wasn’t fun… because i had lots of fun. This was where i further got WOKE. hahaha. I was a social justice advocate even before, but was exposed to inner goings and outs of our society even more. But i really need to move on, it has become too, too … threeeee, foouuur.

so, where was i …. ahhh the death of graphic designers.

oh yeah, i was meaning to say artificial intelligence is taking my whole job and google knows everything.

apparently, these are the requirements to get hired now, according to shillington

And so I am doomed. Hopefully, there are still organizations who would need my services. haha
and that post was from 2024. wait 6 months, and those will change.

And that’s the way it is. Cue Bruce Hornsby.

Standing in line, marking time
Waiting for the welfare dime
‘Cause they can’t buy a job
A man in a silk suit hurries by
As he catches the poor old ladies’ eyes
Just for fun he says, “Get a job”

That’s just the way it is
Some things’ll never change
That’s just the way it is
Ah, but don’t you believe them

Said, “Hey little boy, you can’t go where the others go
‘Cause you don’t look like they do”
I said, “Hey, old man, how can you stand to think that way?
Did you really think about it before you made the rules?”

He said, “Son
Well, that’s just the way it is
Some things’ll never change
That’s just the way it is”
Ah, but don’t you believe them
Mm, yeah

Well, they passed a law in ’64
To give those who ain’t got a little more
But it only goes so far
‘Cause the law don’t change another’s mind
When all it sees at the hiring time
Is the line on the color bar, no, no

That’s just the way it is
Some things’ll never change
But that’s just the way it is
That’s just the way it is, it is, it is, it is

i miss those days. well, i think so. haha.

also, i miss 44.

by the way, please hire me. :p

revenge of the clone

I previously mentioned that i made a website for Unified Hospice Care. Out of the blue, the website just stopped working. For no logical reason. 404 error. So i chatted with godaddy’s tech guy and told me that the DNS somehow isn’t attaching to the website. The domain was registered from Google Domains, the emails associated with it was gsuite and it was through google business account. The email accounts were created first before the website was up because the client needed a reliable email service. So anyways…. the emails also stopped working. Somehow, godaddy wasn’t able to help since the DNS, MX, and whatever is needed isn’t showing up in my dashboard. Since the emails were more important than the website…. well, hospice patients’ needs can not wait on any form of propagation, so we decided to revert the DNS back to google and figure it out later. OR just recreate the content or whatever. This was Wednesday.

Thursday, I decided to go check out Google’s free website that came with the business account. Then i realized why i had to take the website to my godaddy hosting in the first place. It had a limited WIX website builder and a wordpress would require hosting with bluehost. I didn’t like WIX to begin with… i created a website before using WIX when they were just new. It wasn’t my favorite, but it was a working website. Long story short…. i found wix to be so limiting and it was frustrating KNOWING i can do this and that easily in wordpress. But, i still tried . I told myself that sooner or later, i will be using WIX anyways, might as well learn. HOWEVER, i couldn’t access the wp dashboard to copy the text, the files were inaccessible without the wordpress. We were doing this on the fly and making changes and revisions so many times that it was impossible for me to recreate. i gave up. And i am used to using wordpress at work that i just had to create this in wordpress.

I DIDN'T WANT TO REBUILD A WHOLE F*ING WEBSITE.

Saturday, i tried changing the nameservers again…. and hoping it was just a fluke. And after a few minutes, saw propagation started already but of course, we still had to wait. 2 hours into it, the emails stopped working again. Godaddy tech people just can’t help me anymore because it is not their fault it wasn’t transferring over. So i called google so they can guide me and that probably i missed something. It was screen sharing and he can actually see what i am seeing and HE FOUND IT ABSURD even that everything is what is was supposed to be and yet is wasn’t working. He asked if i can patch him with a godaddy tech guy so they can discuss what is happening. So i did, and i thought it was hilarious. But i guess, they do this all the time. So both of them gave up as well. They can’t do anything. Google guy just conceded, i guess. Ball was on their side of the court. Wasn’t godaddy’s fault.

So we reverted back the DNS. The emails need to work.

So, client suggested a BRILLIANT IDEA. Just get another domain name from godaddy. SOLVED. Godaddy peeps sent me all this HOW-TO links, proper way to FTP transfer this to that… etc.

I also did my own research… maybe i can just change the URL of the old website. But can’t access the wp-admin to do that. They are also not recommending messing with the php files if you are not a real pro (which i am totally not). Well, I just have to transfer the website content to the new URL. PROPER WAY TO DO IT is download/backup website A, download the database… and then upload to target website B. i did all that. i followed all the steps without skipping any. Didn’t work.

At that point, i should just be able to edit some… i forgot what. hahaha. But no… didn’t work.

AND THEN… I SAW CLONE as an option in cpanel. WHAT THE…

insert Imperial song by John Williams here…

In less than 30 minutes. No, maybe 10. Fine, in less than 20 minutes. the site was up with the same content. All the links worked. Everything worked. It even changed the website URL by itself. WHAT THE F*#$@. I was with godaddy tech guys the whole day who PROMISED to help me but just gave me links after links of how to do it. Are they not supposed to tell me JUST CREATE A CLONE!??

Anyways… i have been having this recurring dreams of making a post but won’t publish properly because the post page can’t be edited with elementor. Here’s another whine: WHY WOULDN’T ELEMENTOR FIX THEIR POST PAGE THAT WOULD WORK WITH WORDPRESS? It has been a longstanding BUG that they were not fixing. They blame wordpress, actually. The other pages work just fine…but not the POST page. You have to go around to get some blogging content in there. It’s beyond me, really.

For the nth time.

i miss him.

I finally finished updating my portfolio website which i haven’t really touched since… the Sopranos was still on air.  Yes, that long. I was hosting and designing a website for Unified Hospice Care anyways – so why not update my portfolio?

It’s funny how i am discovering new stuff in wordpress each time i log in. How the themes and page builder and plugin apps & businesses keep growing. There are literally thousands (maybe millions) now to choose from.

So anyways.

I am only wishing to get new projects at this time. After my 27″ imac crushed a couple (or five) of years ago because of my stupidity of running a humidifier beside it, i kinda digressed from the freelancing world. My mac kinda shuts down by itself every hour or so like a possessed computer version of Christine. Aside from small and quick projects from friends (a.k.a. birthday invitations & decors), i never got the chance to get more projects. Well…. after my embarrassing ordeal with a beauty brand project which i failed to finish, i didn’t dare take on other projects.

And so, taking a giant risk here of including my current employment projects. i really do not know if it is at all allowed. So included a disclaimer.  Just want to show my favorite projects. And maybe, one of these days… i will talk about them like i did in my YP days.

AND SO, THEREFORE… for THE NTH TIME – I HAVE REDESIGNED MY ONLINE PORTFOLIO.

2004 website design
2015 attempt of a one-page portfolio

First website project in 2021

My first website project in 2021.

Finally finished.  And because i have not been designing or creating more wordpress websites recently… i wasn’t aware of this SSL certificate issues that my own webhost godaddy didn’t have unless you buy a certificate. Costs an arm and a leg, i tell you. And propagating it was a nightmare. Spent 4 days with their tech support promising me at least 24 hours for it to work. Each time i am with one of them on a chat- all of them promised it will be fixed. 3 times i had to make them promise. what’s weird is that it was just supposed to auto-install. But noooooo!

Anyways… the way this wordpress themes work is ridiculous. They give it to you for free and then realize it doesn’t work like how you want it, then end up buying the pro version. On top of that… i got the pro version after promising this and that with the paid theme. Guess what… they haven’t updated the theme for 2 years and won’t reply to my support ticket.

Lesson learned.

I don’t have enough web projects to spend time on wordpress and explore what it has to offer. I AM SURE this software has almost become the INDUSTRY STANDARD for easy content management AND simple website presence, but i swear —  every time i peek into wordpress.org, there is always something new happening.

The digital and virtual world has grown so fast  exponentially like COVID – and i can’t keep up.

promoting my client’s business, as well.

Cos why not?

Hello World.

Hello. World. Hello World.

What? No emojis here? 😛   << oh… well hello there 🙂
